Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is a structural edit of the whole manuscript, done before any line-level work. In fiction and memoir, your editor assesses plot and story arc, character development, pacing, point of view, and chapter order. In nonfiction, your editor assesses the argument, the organization of ideas, and any gaps or repetition. You receive a written assessment and comments in the manuscript that identify what to cut, move, expand, or rewrite. You revise with that guidance, and the book is then ready for copy editing.
