Why a Children’s Book Needs More Than an Upload Button

A regular picture book consists of 32 pages and several hundred words. Sounds interesting and easy, but it's not. The writer has to keep the rhythm of the book in mind with each turn of the page, leave space for illustrations on each double-page spread & make sure the story survives reading it aloud every night for 40 days by a sleepy parent.

Authors face issues once they upload a file to a print-on-demand website. They find out that there are problems such as wrong margins, artwork too close to the spine or the readability does not match the child on the cover. A professional children’s book publisher plans for those problems before the book is built. That’s the work Hancock’s children’s book publishing experts do. As the best children's book publishing company in the USA, we offer editing, illustration, layout & publication.

You might arrive with a polished manuscript, a rhyme scribbled on an envelope or a full set of sketches. All of those work as starting points.

From First Idea to Finished Manuscript

Start With the Messy Version

Tell us the idea the way you’d tell a friend. A folder of notes, a stack of voice memos, or one sentence you can’t stop thinking about all work. In the free consultation we work out what the book is, who it’s for, and what you’d need from us. You don’t commit to anything to have that conversation.

Sit Down and Talk

You have an interview with your writer, and everything is recorded, so there is no need for you to interrupt and write down anything. Just ramble, backtrack and tell that story which you had promised to yourself not to tell on paper. The writer catches the style of your language, where you use jokes and stress on different things.

Argue With the Outline

Before a single chapter exists, your professional book writer maps out the entire book: what goes where, and why. Your job is to push back. Move chapter seven to the front, or cut the one that bores you. The writing process can only begin once you sign off on the outline, because moving an outline costs nothing while moving 200 pages costs something.

Chapter One Is the Test

The writer drafts section by section, and you read each one as it arrives. The first chapter does double duty as a voice check. If it sounds like a stranger wearing your clothes, say so, and it gets fixed before everything else is built on it. By the end, you’ve seen every page grow.

Red Pen Time

The completed draft will be edited and proofread after that. This is where repetitive stories, weak transitions, a name written in two different ways, and typos will be detected. Your last notes will be added. What you need is a manuscript that has been written by one person - yourself.

Now It’s a Book

A finished manuscript can go anywhere. Some authors keep it as it is, and others hand it to our team for cover design, interior formatting, publishing, and marketing. Either way, the book stays yours, and you don’t have to decide what comes next until it’s done.

Craft and location

A Children’s Book Publisher in the USA That Works Around Your Book

Hancock is headquartered in Newport Beach, California, and the work happens online, so an author in Maine goes through the same steps as one in Orange County. If you’re weighing a children’s book publishing agency against a freelancer or a do-it-yourself platform, the useful comparison is how each handles the details below.

01

Written for the Right Age

Board books, picture books, early readers, and chapter books follow different rules for length and vocabulary. We edit and lay out with your reader’s age in mind from the first pass.

02

Page Counts That Print Cleanly

Printed picture books tend to follow set page counts, commonly 32. We plan your spreads around that early, so the story isn’t squeezed or padded at the last minute.

03

Format Choices Explained

Size, binding, and color all change what a book costs and how it feels in small hands. We walk through the trade-offs before you commit.

04

Illustration That Suits the Story

Soft watercolor, bold digital shapes, or a gentle cartoon style each set a different tone. We talk through style during the consultation.

05

A Quote That Fits Your Book

Page count, illustration needs, and print choices drive the cost, so we quote after hearing about your project.
